PATTERSON, LA (WAFB) - Charges were upgraded to manslaughter for a Patterson, La. man after a woman died from injuries she received during a domestic battery.
According to deputies with the St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office, 51-year-old Troy Benoit and 56-year-old Melba Royer were involved in an argument on Feb. 12. During the argument, deputies say Benoit threw Royer to the ground, grabbed her face and neck and repeatedly kicked her. Royer suffered broken ribs and a collapsed lung from the attack.
Benoit was arrested for domestic abuse battery on February 18.
On February 27, deputies responded to a medical emergency at Royer's home on Teche road in Bayou Vista. When they arrived, they found Royer had died in her home.
Investigators learned from the autopsy report that Royer's death was caused by complications from blunt force injuries she received during the attack on February 12.
On May 15, 2015, Benoit was charged with manslaughter.
He remains jailed at the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center with no bail set.
