NEW ORLEANS, LA (WAFB) - DJ Wallace ripped a run-scoring double to left field in the top of the tenth inning, scoring Marcus Tomlin as Southern outlasted Alabama State 13-12 at the SWAC Tournament in New Orleans. The Jaguars are unbeaten after two games and play again Friday at 3 p.m. against a yet-to-be-determined opponent.

Southern appeared to be a run-away winner by the fourth inning, taking an 8-0 lead over the Hornets. However, ASU rallied for eight runs in the bottom of the fourth to tie things up.

The Jaguars trailed briefly 9-8, until Lance Jones, who was 3-for-5 in the game, produced a two-run single highlighting a three run seventh inning rally as Southern regained the advantage, 11-9. Jones added a solo homer in the ninth to make it 12-9 Jaguars, but Cesar Rivera laced a two-run single in the bottom of the ninth to cap the Hornets' three-run rally that tied the game 12-12.

Santos Saldivar earned the pitching victory in relief, and struck out the last two batters of the game to keep Southern unbeaten and in the winner's bracket.

Although the Jags cannot advance to the NCAA Tournament, they are in the driver's seat to make it to Sunday's tournament championship game on ESPNU.
