BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - There's a scam that's specifically targeting small businesses in the Greater Baton Rouge area.
Numerous small business owners have been reaching out to the state Attorney General's Office about the specific scam. In fact, the AG's office itself has received the letter that goes out as part of the scam.
The AG's office says con artists are sending out fake invoices to businesses saying that their listing in a specific ad has ended and they need to pay in order to renew or keep it.
In some cases, people are getting office supplies they never ordered.
The AG's office warns to use common sense in many cases, but also suggest some other tips.
"Make sure you let your employees know that there is a scam going on and try to pick at least one person to be responsible for handling all invoices," said Sam Pleasant with the AG's office.
Some other things include make sure the invoice received is legitimate by either calling that specific company or even put in a purchase order policy that way if it's not followed, you know it's a scam.
If you have any such issues, you can call the Attorney General's consumer protection section at (800) 351-4889.
