BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A big donation presented Wednesday will help provide more resources for women trying to escape dangerous domestic violence situations in Baton Rouge and surrounding areas.
The Walmart Foundation donated $50,000 to the IRIS Domestic Violence Center in Baton Rouge. The facility houses women and their children when they need to flee their homes. Counselors also help women find new places to live and provide free legal assistance.
The donated money will help women who live outside of Baton Rouge.
"Folks who are a little more secluded in our rural areas have a difficult time reaching services," Lynne Medley-Long, Executive Director of IRIS Domestic Violence Center. "There are less providers in those areas. Transportation is a major problem, and for us it can mean the difference between life and death when someone needs to reach out and find a safe place."
The money will fund extra transportation resources and new outreach offices in outlying parishes.
If you or someone you know needs a safe place to go, call the IRIS center at 389-3001 or 1-888-411-1333. It's free, confidential and open 24 hours a day.
