Wildlife and Fisheries agent saves 3-year-old boy from drowning

LIVINGSTON PARISH, LA (WAFB) - It was Mother's Day when Lindsey Schultz and her boyfriend Blake Perry found Schultz's 3-yr-old son Carson lying face down in a swimming pool.

The group was at a friend's house along the Diversion Canal in Livingston Parish when they got busy watching Carson's older brother Ethan, 5, playing with worms. That's when Perry's mom asked where Carson was.

"Before we knew it, my mom asked, 'Anybody seen Carson?' and we immediately ran and jumped up the hill, and I dove into the pool. He was face down floating in the pool," said Perry.

Perry pulled Carson out of the pool and started performing CPR. That's when someone was able to flag down a Wildlife & Fisheries boat along the Diversion Canal with Sr. Agent Michael Marques onboard.

"I jumped out of the vessel before it even stopped or pulled up to the dock," said Marques.

Sr. Agent Marques continued CPR on the little boy until he could feel a heart beat and Carson was breathing on his own. He was struggling to breath on his own, but it proved Carson was fighting for his life.

Carson was rushed to an area hospital where he remains.

"There is no swelling on his brain. There's no injury to his neck. There is inflammation in his lungs, pneumonia in his lungs, fluid in his lungs. He's on a breathing machine," said Schultz.

Carson is expected to remain on a breathing machine till at least Sunday. His mother says a higher power is responsible for so many people being in the right place at the right time to save her little boy.

The Wildlife & Fisheries boat was going upstream the canal only because they needed to refuel. A nurse saw a frantic mother and offered to help. There was an area just feet away for the helicopter to land that took Carson to the hospital, and several volunteers stepped up to save Carson.

"Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I am forever indebted to those people," said Schultz.

Meanwhile, Agent Marques said Carson will now forever be a part of his soul.
