Money Monday: VarageSale expands to Capital area

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The Canada-based VarageSale app is now expanding its services to Baton Rouge and Denham Springs.  It's a way to buy and sell unwanted items from your neighbors online.

Hope Thibodeaux, volunteer administrator, says what makes VarageSale different from other sites like Craigslist is the requirement to have a Facebook page to be a member.

"You can look up a buyer's or seller's profile on Facebook through the platform and check them out," Thibodeaux said. "If you have any mutual friends or if you know them from maybe an extracurricular activity at your child's school or whatever the case may be, that provides an extra level of comfort when you are agreeing to meet someone."
Thibodeaux is a new mother from the Kenner/Metairie area.  Her specific online community has more than 8,000 members alone, and she says more than 250,000 items have been listed on VarageSale from the area since 2013.  The administrator says she has been able to stay home with her 1-year-old son because of the money she has saved and earned from VarageSale.
"Almost everything in my house is from VarageSale at this point," Thibodeaux said.
Users can list or buy anything on the site that is legal.  That includes homes, cars, clothing and designer handbags.
Thibodeaux says there are also community swaps where users can meet in a group at a designated location to network and complete transactions.  Administrators say it's just another way to promote fellowship and do business in a comfortable, safe environment.
"I have met a huge support system of mommas with children my son's age," Thibodeaux said.
VarageSale is officially open for shoppers and sellers now in Baton Rouge and Denham Springs.
