BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The East Baton Rouge Parish School System has announced that two local area seniors have earned National Merit Scholar recognition.
Baton Rouge Magnet High School senior Celeste Runnels and McKinley High School senior Anne Baron Sheffield have been chosen as finalist for the National Merit Scholarship.
The students will undergo a series of reviews that reduce the number of candidates from a total of 1.4 million students across the country to 15,000. Then from that group the winners are chosen.
Those students who are chosen will receive a $2500 scholarship for college.
Finalist are chosen by a committee of high school counselors and college admissions officers based on individual academic records, standardized tests, school and community activities, and essays written by the students.
Earlier this month, Runnels was also chosen as one of two students in Louisiana to be named a U.S. Presidential Scholar for 2015.
