Suspect shot by Lafayette Parish Sheriff Deputies

Lafayette Parish, LA (WAFB) - Louisiana State Police are investigating an officer involved shooting in Lafayette Parish Friday night.

Police say just before 8:30 p.m., Lafayette Parish Sheriff Deputies visited the 1600 block of River Ridge Road to question a suspect about a disturbance in the 100 block of Crip Lane. When they arrived the suspect, 54-year-old Jesse J. Champagne, confronted deputies with a shotgun. That is when deputies shot Champagne.

Champagne suffered gun shot wounds to the lower body in the shooting and was taken to a local hospital where he was treated for his injuries.

Champagne will be charged with indecent behavior with juveniles, simple assault and disturbing the peace.

The Sheriff's Deputy who was involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave pending and internal review in accordance to LPSO policies.

The Louisiana State Police were requested to investigate the shooting.

The investigation into the shooting is still on-going.
