ASCENSION PARISH, LA (WAFB) - Authorities said the body of a boater who disappeared Monday has been found.
The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries said it located the body of Allen Fitzgerald, 24, of Prairieville around 8 a.m. in Bayou Manchac.
According to the passenger in the front of the boat, the two men were out boating in a 12-foot bateau with a six horsepower engine, the night of April 27. They were traveling on Bayou Manchac about three to four miles upstream from the Amite River when they began taking on water.
The front passenger was able to jump in the water before the boat sank. Fitzgerald was in the back of the boat when it was taking on water and was not seen after the boating incident. The passenger was able to make it to shore and to a house where he called 911 for help.
Fitzgerald's boat was found Wednesday afternoon on the Amite River. It was hung on some pylons.
Officials said Monday's heavy rains created a swift current in the water, which prevented divers from being used.
The passenger admitted neither he nor Fitzgerald were wearing life jackets at the time of the incident.
