BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - People rallied on the steps of the State Capitol Wednesday to recognize Disability Rights Day.
Organizers say they are hoping the legislature will give more funding to services for people with developmental disabilities.
13,000 of those people are currently on a ten-year waiting list to get the care and assistance that advocates say they need.
Supporters say without it these people will wind up in an institution.
"In the education system frequently, if not always, it seems as though we are treated as second-class citizens, and that's just not right," said Sen. Dan Claitor, R-Baton Rouge.
?Claitor is behind a bill this session that would require charter schools to accept more students with disabilities.
