Coroner rules the drowning of two LSU graduate students accidental

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

The Baton Rouge Coroner's office has classified the drowning of two LSU graduate students as accidental.

Police say they received a call just after 1 a.m. Sunday morning saying there were two people unresponsive in a pool in the 1300 block of Bob Petit Street.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found a male and female laying at the bottom of the pool. Officers retrieved both of the victims from the pool and they were transported to a local hospital where they were both pronounced dead.

The victims were later identified as 25-year-old Anton Joe, who was a resident at the apartment complex, and 28-year-old Ishita Maity.

The Baton Rouge Coroner's office ruled the drowning Monday an accidental death by drowning.

Joe was a second year graduate student at LSU and Maity was a third year graduate student at LSU. Both were pursuing Ph.Ds in Physics.
