BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Baton Rouge Police say a pregnant woman has been killed in a shooting that took place late Friday night.

The shooting happened in the 200 block of Ship Drive just after 10:30 p.m. Officers arrived on the scene after reports of a shooting and found Brittney Mills, 29, suffering from several gunshot wounds to the upper body.

Investigators believe that she opened her door and was shot by an unknown suspect who fled the scene. Mills was 8 months pregnant at the time of the shooting. She was taken to a local hospital where her unborn child was removed and is currently in stable condition. The baby is expected to survive.

BRPD Cpl. Don Cappola said that the suspect asked to borrow Mills's car, and shot her when she denied.

"If you get a knock at the door, check to see who it is," said BRPD Cpl. Don Coppola. "If you aren't expecting someone, ask who it is or look out of a window. If you feel uneasy, call 911."

Nell Doucet lives across the street from where the shooting took place. She said the neighborhood is usually quiet and was startled by the latest news. She usually walks her dog at night, but says she will think twice next time.

"I walk my dog at night around the block. I wasn't scared before, but maybe I'm scared now." Said Doucet.

The investigation is ongoing and has been turned over to Violent Crimes Detectives. Anyone with information relative to this shooting is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 344-STOP.
