Equal pay bill stalls in House Labor Committee

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Disappointing news for supporters of bringing equal pay to Louisiana at the Capitol Wednesday.

Representative Pat Smith said "shame on us" if lawmakers can't bring equal pay to the state one day.

At first, the House Labor Committee appeared to be moving in HB 182's favor. Representative Kenny Cox spoke on an amendment where he says he simply changed the word "sex" to "gender."

That amendment passed without objection, but the vote on the bill was a different story.

Regardless, Cox still believes Louisiana is ready for what he calls equal pay.

"We want to provide equal pay for people who do the same work with the same qualifications, the same time and grade to include men, women and everybody of every gender," said Rep. Cox, D-Natchitoches.

39 states have equal pay laws. Cox and his team say in Louisiana, for every dollar a man makes, a woman makes just 60 cents of that dollar.
