BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A Senate committee extended the deadline Tuesday for the Capital Punishment Fiscal Impact Commission.
The group says they want to find out if death penalty trials in Louisiana are more expensive than life behind bars.
Their deadline was extended two years to 2018.
"Obviously with a budget crisis taking place in the state of Louisiana, we were not able to meet as many times as we had originally thought," said Sen. JP Morrell, D-New Orleans. "And this is an effort to extend the period of which those groups can look at data and bring recommendations."
The commission last met in February.
A study out of Nevada, which found death penalty trials there were costing more than life imprisonment, influenced their mission.
