BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A teacher from Christian Life Academy in Baton Rouge has been arrested for an alleged intimate relationship with a juvenile student that happened two years ago.
East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Detectives have charged 27-year-old Amber Anderson with felony carnal knowledge of a juvenile.
Detectives reported that the boy's mother brought the the teacher's alleged relationship with her then 15-year-old son to their attention. The victim told detectives that they exchanged sexually explicit text messages and later allegedly had sex at Anderson's residence in 2013.
According to the probable cause affidavit, Anderson and the 15-year-old began texting each other after he got her phone number from another student at the school. The victim told police that as time progressed, "he and [Anderson] became extremely close to one another, and the messages began to become sexual in nature."
The report from the sheriff's office says the victim and Anderson began to exchange nude photos of each other.
The victim told police he and Anderson began having sex in July 2013. He would walk to a fast food restaurant near his house and Anderson would pick him up. She would take him to her house where they would have sex. The victim also told police this happened multiple times in July and August of 2013.
The victim's mother learned that her son and Anderson were exchanging text messages, but because the victim deleted the majority of the texts, his mother did not know the intimate nature of his relationship with Anderson. The victim's mother confronted Anderson about the text messages and told her to stop texting her son. The mother also reported the matter to the school's administration, according to the report.
During the investigation, deputies with the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office learned most of the calls and text messages happened between June and August 2013, and between the hours of 10 p.m. and 2 a.m.
While being questioned by deputies, the teacher admitted to being involved in an intimate relationship with the victim, according to court documents. Anderson told deputies the relationship was a "mistake" and apologized for "taking the victim's innocence."
"It's always very concerning for detectives when we work the sexual assault cases or sexual cases that involve juveniles, but particularly when we work with a teacher and a student because they are in a roll of authority," said Casey Rayborn-Hicks with the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office.
According to her bio on the Christian Life Academy website, Anderson is from Laurel, MS and attended Mississippi State University. Anderson is a Junior High and High School math teacher.
"We're devastated and yet we are thankful that it has been exposed because that type of thing just cannot be tolerated in an academic setting like this," said Dr. Jere Melilli, founder of Christian Life Academy, pastor.
Dr. Melilli said Anderson had been at the school for three years, and she "will no longer be with us," when asked about her employment status with the school.
Dr. Melilli says no one reported the incident to him two years ago.
"I do not know anything about this," said Dr. Melilli. "This is the first day that I have heard anything of this nature."
"We would have taken care of it then and she would no longer have been working for us that day I heard," said Melilli.
Anderson was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison Tuesday. She was released Wednesday on a $25,000 bond.
