Baton Rouge Police training academy starts ahead of body camera vote

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

The East Baton Rouge Metro Council will vote on outfitting Baton Rouge police with body cameras, barring any objections.

The measure was proposed by Councilwoman Denise Marcelle. The idea is up for debate at the upcoming Metro Council meeting. The measure would add the cameras to the department's budget for next year. Chief Carl Dabadie says that, by that time, he hopes to have federal grants that he applied for earlier in the year.

The Baton Rouge Police Department might just have new officers by the time that money comes in.

27 men and women have signed up for a 22 week long Baton Rouge Police training academy. Those who complete the academy will then be paired with a veteran officer for field training.
