BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - LSU starters Alex Lange and Jared Poche' both came within one pitch of blanking the Bulldogs of Georgia on Saturday, leading the Tigers to a 4-1, 9-1 doubleheader sweep in Athens.
Lange allowed a leadoff homerun to Nick King on his third pitch of the game, but Georgia (20-20, 6-11) never scored again, as Lange worked six innings, allowing just five hits and Hunter Newman added three perfect innings to earn the save. The biggest blow for LSU came in the seventh inning, when Kade Scivicque delivered a two-run double.
In game two Scivicque homered in a two-run second to stake Jared Poche' to a lead, and the Lutcher lefty's only mistake was a solo homer he surrendered to Zack Bowers. Poche' went seven innings allowing just four hits, striking out five and walking just one. Parker Bugg pitched two perfect innings of relief to nail down the victory. Freshman Bryce Jordan, who entered the game after Chris Chinea was beaned in the face, led the Tigers with two RBI, while Scivicque was 3-for-3 and scored two runs. On the day, the senior from Maurepas was 5-for7 for LSU (34-6, 12-5).
The Tigers outhit the Bulldogs 14-4 in the nightcap to bring their two-game total to 24 hits, compared to just nine for Georgia. LSU hopes to earn a sweep in the series on Sunday, weather permitting.
