New program hopes to bring awareness to drunk driving

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A local organization and law enforcement are tackling the issue of drunk driving in a new way.

At a booth during Live After 5, the Capital Region Transportation Safety Coalition and authorities stressed the point not to drive while intoxicated with a program called "We've Got Your BAC."

The program gives people the opportunity to use a breathalyzer test. The same test authorities use if you're pulled over on suspicions of drunk driving to find out your blood alcohol content.

"A large number of people underestimate their BAC," said the group's spokeswoman Ashley Hebert. "Many people don't know what that is, and they don't know how to calculate it. People really don't know how their body is affected by alcohol."

Breathalyzer tests are nothing new to Cliff Gouner, who is a safety coordinator at work. He said he can appreciate the effort.

"Anything that is going to help save lives I'm all for it," said Gouner. "I've taken way to many people to the hospital because of accidents on the job."

The group hopes this initiative will bring awareness to a serious issue.
