MORGAN CITY, LA (WAFB) - Investigators say a man who jumped in a bayou to get away from narcotics detectives Thursday morning was arrested Friday.

The St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office searched Bayou Boeuf and nearby areas in Amelia for James Guerin Jr., 36, of Calumet.

Deputies said they received information of possible illegal drug activity at his home and secured a search warrant, but later saw him driving in the Morgan City area.

When detectives tried to pull the vehicle over Thursday, he reportedly sped off. Detectives said they followed him into Amelia, were he reportedly hit a parked car and crashed into a row of industrial sandbags.

Authorities said Guerin got out of the vehicle, ran to the bayou and jumped in. Deputies said one of the detectives got into a pirogue to try to catch Guerin, but he got away.

After searching the waterway with a dive team, deputies believe that Guerin swam to safety and is hiding from police.

Guerin was captured Friday and was taken into custody in Morgan City.
