We'd like to welcome Louisiana lawmakers back to Baton Rouge and we hope they are returning with a renewed sense of energy to tackle the state's problems.
There are some big ones to be addressed, starting with Louisiana's $1.6 billion budget deficit. Our hope is that our state leaders will look beyond short term fixes and one-time money to build a revenue base that is reliable. The $1.6 billion hole we're in is not just a problem for this year. Projections show state budget deficits of between $1 billion and $2 billion for the next five years.
It's not fair to the citizens of the state to continually put access to health care and higher education at risk with a funding plan that does not add up. It will require leadership to address this problem and achieve a more permanent solution than we've found for the last few years. We hope there is a leader or leaders among us who can get this job done this year.
That's "Our Turn." Now, it's your turn. To comment on this segment or anything else, visit us on Facebook or send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
