BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

With more than 100,000 square feet in the arena, along with 2,000 seats in the theater, the River Center hosts around 300 events each year. Those events range from balls and conventions, to ice skating and the symphony. However, the River Center's newest addition says it can do even more.

"It's a great capital city and it deserves a great venue for entertainment and enrichment. I want to make that happen here at the river center," said the Center's new General Manager Michael Day.

Day took over operations on March 2 and succeeds Todd Mitchell who resigned last year. He comes to the Red Stick from the luxury cruise industry where he handled entertainment and special events for liners around the world. Now he hopes to bring that experience to Baton Rouge.

"When guests come here, I want them to feel like they're on a cruise. They can relax, they can be entertained, they can have great food, great fun with other people and not have to worry about getting here or there," said Day.

Perhaps the biggest event facing the new GM is the 2015 Miss USA pageant which will take over the center this summer. Day says the Miss USA team will be on hand later in the month for site inspections.

However, the site could soon be changing. The staff at the river center is in the planning stage for new renovations to the whole campus. Day hopes to install new sound systems, replace seating and improve the overall aesthetic among other things.

"We'd like to make those improvements because we'd like to bring some of those bigger acts to the arena that we're losing to Shreveport and other places and we'd like to bring those back to Baton Rouge," said Day.

There's not yet a timeline on the renovations, but Day hinted that one of those coveted bigger acts could be coming to the arena by the end of the year. As far as who or what that show may be, Day says that's a plan he's keeping under wraps for now.
