BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Baton Rouge Police have arrested a man after they say he shot himself with a stolen gun.
Police say around 4 a.m., they received a call of a shooting at the Crestwood Suites. When officers arrived, they found 19-year-old Ian Scamardo suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg. Scamardo insisted that someone had shot him but upon inspection of the gunshot wound, officers noticed that the entry and exit wounds were consistent with a self inflicted gunshot wound.
During the investigation, officers learned that earlier in the night, Scamardo broke into three cars in the parking lot. A gun and money were taken from the vehicles. That is when detectives learned that Scamardo was playing with the gun when it discharged hitting him in the leg.
During a search of Scamardo's room at Crestwood Suites detectives found more items taken from the vehicles he had broken into.
After further investigation it was found that Scamardo was also wanted for stealing over $1000 in alcohol from Target on Siegen Lane.
Scamardo was taken to East Baton Rouge Parish Prison and booked with three counts of burglary, two counts of theft under $750, theft of a firearm, theft of goods, and criminal mischief. His bond has been set at $45,500.
