BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

A man is in jail after shooting another man multiple times during a fight Monday, according to the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office.

Deputies were called out to the 12000 block of Arena Drive around 11 p.m. where a witness said a man was shot by 61-year-old Oliver Matthews.

A witness told deputies that Matthews and the victim were fighting at the end of Arena Drive before he broke it up, convincing Matthews to leave and get alcohol from a store.

When the witness and Matthews returned, he and the victim started to argue, again. The witness said Matthews then pulled out a gun and fired several shots at the victim before leaving in his truck.

Deputies report that the victim was found laying in the backyard with gunshots to both the chest and lower body. EMS was called to the scene and transported the victim to the hospital. He is listed in critical condition.

Matthews was arrested by deputies after he returned back to the scene. They searched his vehicle and found a gun in the side door.

Matthews allegedly admitted to deputies that he and the victim fought over a drink. He claims the victim had placed the drink on the back of his truck, but when he asked the victim to remove it so he could leave, he refused. Matthews says he later knocked the drink to the ground. He said after that the victim punched Matthews in the face.

Matthews admitted to deputies that he shot at the victim, but was not sure if he hit him.

Matthews was booked into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison and charged with attempted second-degree murder and illegal use of weapon.
