Mayor of Loreauville killed in car accident, 4 others injured

LOREAUVILLE, LA (WAFB) -

A head-on collision in Iberia Parish has killed the mayor of Loreauville and injured four others.

Police say just after 6:40 p.m. Friday, a 2006 Dodge Ram driven by 34-year-old Forrest Simon was driving east on LA Highway 86 when his car crossed the centerline and hit a 2013 Ford Mustang that Mayor Al Broussard was a passenger in.

65-year-old Broussard was pronounced dead at the scene by the Iberia Parish Coroner's office. The driver of the car, 62-year-old Phyllis Savoy sustained critical injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Both Broussard and Savoy were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident.

Simon, who was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident, sustained moderate injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital. Simon's passengers, 26-year-old Catherine Derouen and a juvenile, suffered minor injuries.

During the investigation it was found that the juvenile in Simon's vehicle grabbed and jerked the steering wheel causing it to cross the centerline.

Impairment is not suspected in the accident but routine toxicology tests were taken.

Simon and Derouen were cited for No Seat Belt. The juvenile was cited for obstruction to driver's views or driving mechanism.

The crash remains under investigation and more charges could be filed.
