LAKE CHARLES, LA (WAFB) - The Southern University baseball team edged McNeese State 5-4 Tuesday night in Lake Charles, extending the Jaguars' win streak to four games.
Jose DeLa Torre hit two home runs and Tyler Kirksey drove in what turned out to be the winning run on an infield hit with a head-first slide as Southern (7-15) exceeded its win total in the first six weeks of the season (3) with four wins in four days.
The Jaguars swept a three-game series from Grambling on Saturday and Sunday.
J'Markus George earned the win with four and two-third innings of relief, allowing just two runs. Closer Rafael Diaz earned his third save, pitching out of trouble in the eighth and adding a scoreless ninth to preserve the victory.
DeLa Torre hit a solo homer in the first and a two-run shot in the third to give the Jags 1-0 and 3-2 leads. However, it was Sergio Torres and Kirksey with RBIs in the fourth that provided the winning margin over McNeese State (17-12).
Southern next travels to Prairie View for a weekend series against the Panthers.
