METAIRIE, LA (WAFB) - Alex Bregman drove in four runs with a sacrifice fly, a double, a triple and a home run to lead 3rd-ranked LSU past UL-Lafayette 8-6 in the Wally Pontiff Jr. Classic in Metairie Tuesday night. Russell Reynolds pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the second inning when the game was tied 2-2, and went on to give the Tigers four-and-two-thirds innings of quality relief to earn his second win of the season.
LSU (24-5) would take the lead for good in the bottom of the second on Chris Chinea's solo home run that made it 3-2. The Tigers added three more in the third on Bregman's RBI triple that scored Mark Laird who had walked and Kade Scivicque's two-run homer that sailed over the 400 foot mark in dead center at Zephyr Field.
Bregman added a run-scoring double in the fourth and a solo home run in the sixth to close out LSU's scoring. UL-Lafayette (15-11) rallied for four runs in the seventh, but could never get any closer. The Cajuns' first two runs came on bases-loaded walks issued by LSU starter Kyle Bouman, who only lasted an inning and a third.
LSU had taken a 2-0 first inning lead on Bregman's sacrifice fly and Scivicque's run-scoring single that plated Conner Hale. The Tigers travel directly to Hoover, Alabama where they begin an SEC series with Alabama Thursday night at 7:00 on the SEC Network.
