I was working in Okinawa, Japan, when I was diagnosed with colon cancer and informed of the necessity for surgery. Since this surgery wasn't done on island, and, since I was a civilian, I was entitled to be medivaced to the nearest U.S. port ... Honolulu, Hawaii. My doctor in Okinawa found me a wonderful doctor at a wonderful civilian hospital. My employer, the Department of Defense Dependent Schools, sent a friend to be with me from the time I was released from the hospital until I was released to return to Okinawa. Another friend had a sister and brother-in-law who loaned us their extra car. There's more to the story. In the end, I had wonderful treatment and managed to send souvenirs home to my extensive family!
