BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A 1-year-old boy was taken to the hospital after he was burned while in the care of his mother' boyfriend.
Police say the mother left her son in the care of her boyfriend, 34-year-old Alexis Powell, when she left for work. She says around 9 p.m. Powell called her to say that the child stepped into a tub filled with hot water and got burned. Powell then sent a picture of the boy's injury to the mother. The mother then left work to pick up the boy and bring him to the hospital.
Powell says he attempted to take care of the injury by putting peroxide and Neosporin on the burn. He then went to his sister's house to call the child's mother.
When asked why he didn't bring the child to the hospital, Powell admitted that he did not bring him because he had warrants.
Doctors described the child's injuries as minor second degree burns mid-way up the back of his right calf.
Powell turned himself into police and was charged with cruelty to a juvenile and a no seat belt violation from an existing warrant.
Bond has not yet been set.
