HAMMOND, LA (WAFB) - A Loranger woman was arrested and charged with reckless operation of a motor vehicle and first offense DWI after her vehicle was struck by a train Saturday night in Hammond, just after 8 p.m.
Hammond Police Officers were called to Thomas Street at the rail road tracks. When officers arrived, they found the 2013 Toyota Corolla sitting on the tracks, facing north. The driver of the vehicle was identified as 33-year-old Tammy Lee Bales.
Police reports say the car had turned off of Thomas Street onto the tracks headed south and got stuck when it drove off the concrete sidewalk onto the track bed.
A witness called 911 and started yelling that a train was coming. Hammond Police dispatchers were on the phone with the railroad to try to get the train to stop. The train conductor did not get the warning in time and hit the vehicle. Reports say the car was knocked into a nearby parking lot where it hit a parked truck.
Police say there were no injuries to anyone on the scene.
Bales was booked into the Hammond Police Jail.
