ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST PARISH, LA (WAFB) - Officials in St. John the Baptist Parish are re-activating a contract that would allow the trapping and removal of coyotes from residential areas.
The Department of Public Safety will be working with Wildlife and Fisheries and Nuisance Wildlife Control Operator during the 30-day time period of the contact.
Based on the reported sightings, traps have been placed in wooded areas along Highway 51 near the interstate. More traps will be put where needed.
"Our goal is to catch the coyotes before they get to the residential areas," says Deputy Director of Public Safety Travis Perrilloux. "The control operator expects the coyotes to be entering residential areas from this location."
Residents in the impacted areas are asked to to be mindful of small children and pets and to not approach the coyotes.
Residents are also asked that if they see any coyotes, to please report them to the Department of Public Safety by calling (985) 652-2222. Once they trap the coyotes, they will be transferred to another parish where they will be used for training purposes.
