PRAIRIEVILLE, LA (WAFB) -

A woman who was driving an SUV that went off a highway, hitting and killing two children who were fishing along the road, pleaded no contest to careless operation charges.

Shawnette Taylor, 48, of Prairieville, will pay a $175 fine in the crash that killed Sarai Lanus, 9, and her brother, Daylon, 6. They were from Geismar and attended Dutchtown Primary.

An Ascension Parish grand jury declined to indict Taylor on two counts of negligent homicide. However, troopers with Louisiana State Police found probable cause to cite Taylor with careless operation.

Investigators said the children were fishing down an embankment with their father and two adult family friends on June 24, 2014 when a 2004 Nissan Armada driven by Taylor veered off the roadway and hit the group.

The three adults were injured, but survived.
