BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - People in favor of the City of St. George turned a petition with more than 18,000 signatures into the Registrar of Voters' Office last October in hopes of create the new city in East Baton Rouge Parish.
All the signatures have to be verified, and officials say that the final tally will not be ready until sometime next week.
Officials said earlier that the final count could have come either Wednesday or Thursday of this week. However, the Registrar's office has shifted its focus to the special runoff election for the Louisiana House District 66 race that is between two Baton Rouge Metro Council members, one current member Buddy Amoroso and former member Darrell Ourso.
The November and December elections also delayed the validation process. However, officials have said that a final tally could come either Wednesday or Thursday.
It is estimated that St. George supports need between 16,500 and 18,000 signatures, but the exact number needed to put the issue on a ballot is not know. St. George organizers say they are ready if they come up short.
