BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Transportation officials across the country, including those in Louisiana, are recognizing Work Zone Awareness Week.
The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development set up 579 safety cones at its headquarters to represent the lives lost to work zone accidents across the nation in 2013.
Together with representatives from Louisiana State Police, the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission and the Federal Highway Administration, DOTD Secretary Sherri Lebas urged drivers Tuesday morning to always use caution around work zones, as many work zone related accidents are preventable.
"The way that you do that is to slow down, pay attention, read the signage, pay attention to the signage and respect the workers that are working to repair the roadways and bridges," Lebas said.
Louisiana had eight work zone deaths in 2013.
