Some of the area's hottest summer camps are preparing for a registration rush.
Those living in East Baton Rouge parish can begin signing up their children for BREC camps on Saturday, March 21 at 9 a.m. Registration for those living outside EBR starts March 31. Online registration is available for select locations, while others are on-site only.
BREC offers 32 general recreation camps where parents can drop kids off at the same location throughout the summer.
13 specialty camps run over various weeks depending on age. Children can mix and match specialty camps for different experiences. They include Athletics, Art, Zoo, Swamp, Extreme, Horse-Lover, Theatre, History, Stargazers, Outdoor Adventure, Tennis, Disabled-Inclusive, and a new Nature-Lover camp.
Financial assistance is offered on a first-come, first-served basis.
Registration forms and general information about each camp can be found here: www.brec.org/summercamp
BREC's Playground Kidz program offers structured playground programs for children not attending camps. In addition, BREC on the Geaux mobile recreation units will make stops at Housing Authority complexes and parks in areas in which it's not safe to walk or there isn't a playground nearby.
The popular Splashpad attractions will open in March, with two new Splashpads opening at Highland Rd. and Jackson Community Parks later in the spring. Liberty Lagoon opens in May on weekends and in June seven days a week. Swimming lessons are available through a partnership with YMCA.
The PGA Jr. Golf League is a new program this summer for kids ages 13 and younger.
