PIERRE PART, LA (WAFB) - According to Assumption Parish Sheriff Mike Waguespack, Deputy Kelli Matherne rescued a man trapped in a vehicle submerged in a Pierre Part bayou off of Lee Drive.
Deputy Matherne noticed a light shining out of the bayou just around 12:15 a.m. on Thursday. She realized it was coming from a vehicle under water. She heard sounds from a person inside the vehicle.
Sheriff Waguespack said the deputy immediately jumped into the bayou and attempted to break the windows. Another deputy arrived and helped her break open the windshield to get the driver out before he drowned.
The driver was taken to the hospital and treated. Deputy Matherne was also treated for cuts she received when she broke the glass.
Deputy Matherne is a patrol deputy who has been with the Assumption Parish Sheriff's Office for just under 2 years.
"We would like to commend Deputy Matherne for her quick thinking and heroic actions that ultimately saved the drivers life," said Sheriff Waguespack.
This is an on-going investigation and charges may be forthcoming based upon the results of a routine toxicology test.
