HOUSTON, TX (WAFB) - LSU won its 12th straight game, overcoming an early 1-0 deficit to beat Nebraska 4-2 at the Houston College Classic on Sunday at Minute Maid Park.
Freshman starter Jake Godfrey improved to 3-0 on the season after surrendering a first inning run on Nebraska DH Ben Miller's RBI single, scattering eight hits and two runs over seven innings to earn the victory. A bases-loaded double play in the seventh kept the Cornhuskers from taking another lead late in the game.
Zac Person pitched a scoreless eighth inning and Parker Bugg did the same in the ninth for his first save of the year. Connor Hale led the way at the plate for the Tigers, driving in two runs and extending his hitting streak to 16 games with a first inning RBI double that gave LSU (15-1) the lead for good. Chris Chinea had tied the game with a single that scored Jake Fraley, who was 2-for-5 on the day.
Connor Hale added an RBI with a third inning grounder scoring Alex Bregman, who was 2-for-4 and scored two runs and also made an over-the-shoulder catch for the final out of the game. Nebraska (7-6) had the tying run at the plate before Bregman made the grab of a pop fly in shallow left field with his back to home plate.
LSU is scheduled to host McNeese State Wednesday, before opening SEC play at home Friday with a series against Ole Miss.
