BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Traffic was backed up for a few hours on I-110 South after a truck lost its load of mulch on the highway early Friday afternoon.
Witnesses said that the truck hit a bump sending mulch into the roadway on I-110 South past Airline Highway to Hollywood Street. Workers were called in to clean up the mess as traffic passed through the left lane before the lanes were reopened shortly after 4 p.m.
Several drivers crossed lanes of traffic to get to the median and illegally turn into oncoming traffic to avoid the backup. Baton Rouge Police were eventually called in to deal with the situation.
Many drivers, who were stuck in traffic, believed it was okay to cross a median. Louisiana State Police Trooper Jared Sandifer said they have the wrong idea.
"That's a danger to other people on the road ways," said Sandifer. "We don't want people to ever cross the median in a traffic jam. There is a law that people can't cross a median."
Sandifer also said people will not get arrested for crossing, but will receive a citation.
