COVINGTON, LA (WAFB) - Investigators said they believe high speed and impairment were factors in a deadly crash early Friday morning.
Louisiana State Police reported Lloyd Giddens, 27, of Folsom, was killed in a wreck on LA 25 in Covington around 2:15 a.m.
Tpr. Greg Marchand with LSP said the investigation so far showed Giddens lost control of the 2011 Infiniti M37 he was driving, causing the car to flip and hit two trees. He added car was speeding when it veered to the left, leading to the accident. He also said troopers don't yet know what caused him to be going so fast or swerve.
St. Tammany Fire District 12 said it was dispatched to the scene because of reports the driver was trapped inside. Firefighters said they removed the roof of the car to get to him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Tammany Parish Coroner's Office.
According to Marchand, Giddens was wearing a seat belt. Fire officials reported the impact of the crash threw the engine about 40 feet away from the car.
Marchand said a blood sample was taken from Giddens and sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.
The crash is still being investigated.
