BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

A train was stopped on the tracks at Government Street after hitting a car on Tuesday, according to Baton Rouge Police Department spokesman Cpl. Don Coppola.

Officers report that the car was traveling east on Government Street around 5:30 p.m. and came to the railroad crossing as the lights were flashing. The driver tried to beat the train before the safety arms came down.

The train struck the SUV on the passenger side and blocked traffic from Government Street between 15th and 16th streets. BRPD and EMS were called out to the scene.

The driver went to the hospital after sustained minor injuries and was cited with failure to yield to a train. Government Street has since been reopened.
