GONZALES, LA (WAFB) -

Officials said a family safely escaped a fire Sunday in spite of the fact the smoke detectors in the home did not work.

The Gonzales Fire Department reported it happened on North Pleasant Street around 2:45 p.m.

Firefighters said there were flames and heavy smoke in the carport area of the home when they arrived on scene.

They added everyone inside had made it out, but firemen rescued the family's two parakeets.

Investigators said the carport area had noticeable damage and there was slight damage to a wall inside the home. They added a car parked under the carport also had slight damage due to the fire.

The cause of the fire has not been released.

Fire officials added the family is staying at the Ascension Fire House, a project developed by the Ascension Parish Chamber of Commerce leadership group.
