Investigators are on the scene of a house fire in which an elderly woman was found dead inside early Tuesday morning.

The Louisiana Office of State Fire Marshal reported Mary Ann Sam, 73, of Opelousas, was found dead in the home once the flames were put out.

Deputies said Sam's home on Montgomery Road caught fire around 4 a.m. The wood-framed house burned to the ground and only charred rubble remained.

Sam's body was released to the St. Landry Parish Coroner's Office. The state fire marshal's office said it has requested an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

Authorities said Sam lived alone and the exact cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

Investigators said the initial findings show it started on the west side of the home.

They continue to collect evidence in the ongoing investigation.
