BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Investigators said two men were shot by police and taken to the hospital after they allegedly tried to run over officers during an attempted traffic stop Monday night.

The Baton Rouge Police Department reported it happened at the Acadian Village Shopping Center at Acadian Thruway and Perkins Road around 11 p.m.

Cpl. Don Coppola Jr. said a driver and passenger were shot when they allegedly tried to run over officers with a car while trying to get away. He added their injuries are not considered life-threatening.

According to Coppola, the incident started when officers with BRPD assisted Department of Public Safety officers with a 2006 Mercedes-Benz E350 that refused to pull over.

He said that's when the driver tried to run over the officers with the car and officers fired several shots at the car. None of the officers were injured.

Coppola added the officers were placed on administrative leave while the investigation into the shooting continues.

Authorities have not released any names in the shooting.
