GONZALES, LA (WAFB) -

The Gonzales Chief of Police was honored today at a Black History Month celebration at G.W. Carver Primary School.

The event was made to honor famous African Americans who paved the way in leadership positions.

Gonzales Chief of Police Sherman Jackson was the guest speaker at the event because he was Gonzales's first African American chief of police. Kindergarteners honored Jackson through writing letters explaining what they learned about him.

Jackson's speech focused on his journey, and the life lessons that helped him get to where he is today.

"I quickly learned the value of a good education, respect for others, love of yourself and hard work." Said Jackson, "The combination of these three can lead to greater successes if you want them badly enough."
