Hundreds of plant workers to go on strike

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Hundreds of refinery workers plan to walk out on the job at several Louisiana plants in hopes of improving work conditions.

Members of the United Steelworkers Union will go on strike across the nation on Saturday February 21, 2015.

Union spokesperson Brent Petit said this strike is all about safety and that union workers want companies to improve working conditions by staffing more people. Petit added workers are sick of long and tiring shifts.

"It's not unusual to have operators work anywhere from 500 to 600 or even 1,000 hours of overtime a year, which is averaging more than 60 hours a week," said Petit.

Petit added nearly 800 workers in Louisiana will go on strike demanding changes at oil and refinery companies Shell and Motiva. The strike will start at 11:30 p.m. Saturday.

WAFB tried to contact someone at the Motiva plant and was met with a voicemail:

"USW representative employees have given notice to strike the convent refinery 11:30 Saturday February 21. As a result we have activated our strike contingency plan to insure normal operations continue at the Convent refinery."
