LABADIEVILLE, LA (WAFB) - Investigators said an arrest has been made in a deadly stabbing believed to have been the result of an argument and fight over cigarettes.
The Assumption Parish Sheriff's Office reported William Thompson, 61, of Labadieville, was taken into custody Wednesday night on a charge of manslaughter in the stabbing death of Daquan Rainey, 20, also of Labadieville. Bond has not been set.
Sheriff Mike Waguespack said Thompson admitted to stabbing Rainey inside a home. The Orleans Parish Coroner's Office reported the stab wound severed Rainey's pulmonary artery. Investigators said Rainey ran out of the home after getting stabbed and collapsed. A knife, believed to be the weapon that killed Rainey, was found outside.
Officials said Rainey previously lived in Houma and had just recently moved to Assumption Parish with relatives.
Conviction on manslaughter in Louisiana carries a sentence of 15 to 40 years in prison.
The investigation is ongoing.
