LIVINGSTON PARISH, LA (WAFB) - Authorities are investigating a single-vehicle crash in which the driver, suspected of being impaired, was thrown from the SUV when it flipped after veering off the road Thursday evening.
Louisiana State Police reported Louis Gurka III, 55, of Baton Rouge, was killed in an accident on LA 63 (Weiss Road) south of LA 449 (North Corbin Road) in Livingston Parish around 8:30 p.m.
Tpr. Jared Sandifer with LSP said the preliminary investigation showed Gurka was headed north on LA 63 in a 2002 GMC Yukon when the vehicle went off the road. He added it has not yet been determined what caused the SUV to run off the road.
Sandifer stated the Yukon then hit a culvert, went airborne, landed on its front bumper and flipped several times. According to troopers, Gurka was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected. He was flown by helicopter to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge. He later died from his injuries.
Investigators said driver impairment may have been a factor in the crash. A sample of Gurka's blood was sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. It typically takes several weeks for the full results.
The crash remains under investigation.
