The No. 4 Tigers are geared up to play their 2015 season opener Friday night against a Kansas program that's won five of its last six against LSU.
"Everyone's showing up eight hours too early to the stadium listening to the music in the locker room at full blast. We actually blew the speakers out last year, and I'm sure we're going to do it again. But we're very excited, especially when you play in front of the best fans in the country," said junior shortstop Alex Bregman.
Head coach Paul Mainieri revealed his lineup for the game on Thursday. Junior right fielder Mark Laird is set to lead off ahead of the All-American Bregman. Laird was a Cape Cod League All-star, hitting 358 last summer.
"I've hit there my whole life, like all through... except when I got here, all through high school and all through summer ball, whenever, I've always hit leadoff. And going on my third year, the excitement's never not there you know. I'm always excited to get in front of our huge fan base and play baseball in front of the best fans in college baseball," said Laird.
Excitement is a common theme for the top hitters in Mainieri's lineup that has Connor Hale batting third, Chris Chinea at cleanup and Jake Fraley. Fraley is followed by Andrew Stevenson, Kade Scivicque, Danny Zardon and Kramer Robertson. Sophomore Jared Poche' will face the Kansas lineup.
"They're a very confident team, and don't be fooled by the name Kansas on their shirt. They only have seven players from Kansas. Most of their players are California kids and Texas kids and Arizona kids and Hawaii and Nevada," said Mainieri.
Friday's game will start at 7 p.m. and the entire weekend series will be televised on the SEC Network.??
