BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The health care enrollment period is looming, and those who are not insured before the deadline could face a tax penalty.
www.healthcare.gov's open enrollment period started November 15 and it ends Sunday, February 15, and if someone misses the deadline, they could be stuck with the full cost of medical bill as well as a harsh tax penalty. It is a fate that doctors are trying to warn people about.
"You know we need to protect our family, and those who are important to us, and I think health insurance is a critically important part of that," says Dr. David Carmouche, "The bottom line is that without insurance, you largely are going to cover the cost of the care for you and your family out of pocket."
More than 148,000 Louisiana residents have signed up for health care coverage as the deadline looms.
People who miss the enrollment period will have to wait until the 2016 open enrollment period begins sometime in the fall.
