Officials investigate deadly fire in Baton Rouge

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Investigators are trying to determine what caused a deadly house fire Friday morning in Baton Rouge.

The Baton Rouge Fire Department confirmed one person died in a fire on Park Drive, which is off Florida Boulevard. Authorities said it started around 9:30 a.m.

The victim's name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

"Any time firefighters faced or we have fatality involved or injuries, you know, it's not something we want to see," said Curt Monte with BRFD. "That's why we preach and practice and try to teach fire safety. Not saying in this instance that anything was done wrong, but it's a good time to remember to practice your escape plan, have a meeting place."

Monte added foul play is not suspected in the fire.

He said firefighters arrived at the scene to find the back part of the home on fire and the victim was found dead when they went in to search.

Monte also said firefighters got the flames under control before they could spread to other houses.

The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
