EBR School Board begins search for new superintendent

EBR School Board begin search for new superintendent

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Ads for a new leader of the East Baton Rouge Parish School System could be out by next week, as the board began the search for a new superintendent Thursday night.

Superintendent Dr. Bernard Taylor's contract ends in five months. The special meeting called by the East Baton Rouge Parish School Board to get the search underway didn't take long.

Taylor has led the school district since 2012 and his tenure will end in June. Now, the search falls to the newly formed search committee, which is made up of board members Barbara Freilberg, Tarvald Smith and Connie Bernard. The first step will be to allow ads for the position to go out.

"The qualifications will be listed," Smith said. "We're still composing the ad, but definitely, someone that can lead the district, that has experience leading."

Next, the search committee will begin meeting to discuss what it wants in the next superintendent. It will be up to the trio to collect applications and make recommendations to the full school board. According to EBR School Board President David Tatman, public input throughout the process will be key.

"I think the success of the next superintendent is really going to be based on their ability to bring the community together and to get by in from all aspects of the community," Tatman said. "The faith-based community, the business community - to go out and really be an ambassador for education."

The search committee is expected to meet in the next week and the public is welcome to attend.
